Concept Description
Mosquito Shield was founded in September of 2001 in response to the absence of an effective residential mosquito control service and the inadequacy of control products such as body sprays, candles and mosquito magnets. Now, over 1 million treatments and over 400 franchise locations later, Mosquito Shield’s proprietary control products and specialized spray techniques keep tens of thousands of American homes mosquito and tick-free every year.
Our company founder, started as franchise owner with a national lawn care franchise and, having listened to the evolving needs of his customers, understood there was a market for a residential mosquito control service and decided to strike out on his own. He started developing his own proprietary blend of all-natural oils and select control products, and testing application methods and treatment frequencies with the goal of perfecting an
effective and responsible solution. The result was Mosquito Shield, a service designed to control mosquitoes and other outdoor pests.
Mosquito Shield spent the next few years refining its customer acquisition and retention strategies, and taking a methodical approach to growth that led to the launch of its proprietary tick control service, Tick Shield, and special event service, Event Shield.
The Mosquito Shield Franchise Corporation was launched in 2013 and has since developed into the leading franchise opportunity in this growing home services sector. By combining a great product with past experience as a franchisee, our founder and team established a franchise model that delivers a superior experience for both consumers and owners.
In March of 2022, Mosquito Shield was acquired by Five Star Franchising, an innovative service-based franchise platform company. Five Star has a mission to ensure its brands are top performers in technology, marketing, branding, and people. With a franchisee-first approach to business, Five Star excels at ensuring local-market success for each of their franchisees.
Residential mosquito and tick control services are now part of a structural pest control industry that generated an estimated $9.359 billion in total service revenue in the United States in 2019, up from $8.971 billion in 2018 (source). With the threat of mosquito and tick-borne illnesses on the rise in the United States, the residential mosquito control market has become the fastest-growing pest control segment, with service revenue from residential barrier treatments increasing at a compound annual growth rate in excess of 22% since 2017.
The market for residential mosquito and tick control has grown in recent years.

Mosquito Shield’s corporate team closely monitors conversion data throughout the buying season and reviews analytics daily to identify optimization strategies. The marketing team meets with each franchise owner weekly during peak season to review performance reports, discuss strategy, and identify trends. This allows the team to make optimizations related to campaign timing, weather conditions, mosquito populations, and other qualitative factors.
While Mosquito Shield has developed a strong blueprint for marketing success, we also recognize that modern marketing is a constantly-evolving practice and do not adopt a “one-size fits all” approach. We recognize and value the investments of our franchisees, and treat every dollar invested into marketing and growth as if it were pulled from our own bank accounts. As such, we encourage participation and offer guidance and support for local efforts. Each franchisee is empowered with access to a digital marketing portal that contains corporate-approved brand assets and advertising templates, and detailed brand standards, including color guides, fonts, logos and much more.
