Do you want to run a business that gives you plenty of time away from it? A hair salon franchise should work for you if you’re in one of the following situations:
- You’re looking for an eventual exit strategy from the corporate rat race.
- You are (or are married to) a “Stay at Home Mom” who wants to do some work, but needs a flexible schedule .
- You’re in a business that’s seasonal, affected by the economy, threatened by technology or just too unstable or too stressful.
- You want to diversify and have alternate sources of income.
- You want to retire early, yet still have an income source and/or a business to run.

Was it important for you to be able to keep your job when you opened your first store?
That was something we were focusing on–something that didn’t necessitate always having to be there. If (you) work the system correctly, have a manager who’s taking care of the day to day, you can schedule an hour or two a week once you’re up and running to manage the store, without having to be there. For us, it’s mainly a model that will become a revenue generator as we grow.

How does Sport Clips differ from other franchise opportunities?
The overall framework of the Sport Clips franchising model was very well documented. They had the infrastructure that was in place to get us started from scratch and to grow our business over time.

Was the initial training helpful and thorough? Did it prepare you well for what was to come?
Yes, the initial training was helpful and thorough. I think the only way to have problems is if you forget to use what you learn. All the manuals are extremely thorough. We were well prepared for success.

Were you able to get a good territory when you started? Was Sport Clips’ real estate department a big help?
We were able to get a very good territory. It is basically an untapped market right now. Sport Clips Real Estate department gave us several stores we could get into, so we had a lot of options.

History:
In the early 1990s, Gordon Logan recognized the huge potential, and relative lack of competition, in the men’s and boys’ haircut market. He wanted to create a place where guys could take care of one of life’s necessities – a haircut – and say “This is my kind of place, I feel comfortable here” when they walked in the door. Assembling a group of passionate industry professionals, Gordon and his team worked together develop the unique Sport Clips Haircuts concept we know today. While Sport Clips’ logo and store design have changed since the first location opened in Austin, Texas in 1993, Gordon’s goal, and Sport Clips’ mission, to provide a “championship haircut experience in an exciting sports-themed environment” remains the same.
Prior to founding Sport Clips, Gordon served as an Aircraft Commander in the U.S. Air Force, after which he worked as a financial planning and control consultant with Price Waterhouse & Co. in Houston, Texas. He is a graduate of MIT and The Wharton School of Business, at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a retired CPA in the State of Texas. Gordon later owned and operated salons throughout Texas, an experience which proved to be invaluable in his journey toward creating one of the most successful haircut franchises in the nation.
